Alexandra Bircken (b. 1967 in Cologne, Germany) lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
Bircken creates large sculptural works to create installations of natural and synthetic materials. She has developed her own unique lexicon and style that is informed by her background in textiles and a strong understanding of the materials she uses.
Her use of materials often relates directly with the female body and the natural world. With motorcycle leathers, woven yarns or nylon tights, or phallic forms in the gallery, Bircken manages to portray gendered presence as metaphor.
