Arnis Balcus works with the issues of personal and collective identity, memory and history. His work documents extreme intimacy illuminate, in touching and sometimes whimsical detail, the social and sexual life of pan-European youth. They explore, analyse and celebrate the snapshot culture yet they transcend not only any element of seediness but also the formal limitations of the snapshot.
Balcus’s solo exhibitions include ‘Amnesia’ at Riga Art Space (2009), (touring to Ventspils and Talsi); ‘Episodes Vol. I’, Matthew Bown Gallery, London (2006); ‘Naked’, Matthew Bown Gallery, London (2004); ‘Exhibition Hall Arsenals of the State Museum of Art’, Fotogalerie Wien, Vienna .
Arnis Balcus (b.1978) lives and works in London, UK.
