Helen Johnson (b. 1979 in Melbourne, Australia) lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
Painting is at the core of Johnson’s practice. Her approach to figurative painting is not one of conventional representation but a process of constructing figures and scenes from disparate sources, paring back and pushing source imagery towards abstraction. This is a means of opening it to contemplation anew, something that is of particular interest when dealing with imagery that references Australian history a continuing thread in her.
She often employs a play between flatness and thick, built-up surfaces to confound the spatial logic and compositional conventions within a painting.
