Simon Martin’s work examines the various histories of the created object, looking at their changing personalities through history and context. An on-going project looks at the museum experience with particular attention to the relationship between viewer and artefact. Through an examination of the displaced object, he focuses on the abstract nature of collection building, treated historically as simply an individual’s accumulation of ’things’.
His new film commission for Kelvingrove takes the form of a remote drift through objects and reproductions gleaned from multiple sources. The work is presented over a number of key sites throughout the building, with reference to the museum’s unique hang.
