Exercises in style
4 Murano Street
Exercises in Style brought together work by three artists – Alistair Dearie, Lotte Gertz and Lorna Macintyre – who share an interest in what art historian Norman Bryson has described as the ‘slow, almost geological rhythm’ of simple utensils in contrast to the instant obsolescence associated with complex technologies.
The project reflected upon an expanded notion of still life through photography, sculptural installations, ceramic objects and painting – and the slow process of building relations between them. Part of the development of the individual works has involved, when possible, ongoing dialogue between the artists, studio visits, and exchanging and living with each other’s work. The exhibition took place in a former shop on Murano Street in north-west Glasgow, a space that is usually Alistair Dearie’s pottery studio.
