Flora Johnstone Flora Johnstone

Flora Johnstone lived in Lochdar in South Uist and anyone visiting the area in the 1970s was confronted with her curious shell art. In Flora’s garden stood an old motorbus and one day she started to collect seashells from the nearby shore to decorate it. These shells were all shapes, sizes and colours but she mostly opted for cockles and whelks. She would glue these shells into the inside of tin lids and then stick the tin lids onto the outside of the bus. Soon the “magic bus” was completely covered with shells and people would come for miles to see it!
