Contemporary African Dance: Workshop with Erick Mauricia Valentin

Event
Workshop

The first hour of the workshop will concentrate on an active approach to stretching, working out from the perspective of years of Yoga and Tai Chi based practices, emphasising on core stability and it’s role within the transfer of power from the legs to the upper body. Exploring ways to increase flexibility and posture, states that can often causes many problems due to muscle imbalances in the body. This class is aimed at everyone who is interested in ongoing physical training exercises and approaches.

Some points of reference to the approaches we will be working on are as follows: Concentration, Breathing, Posture, Centralling, Control, Flowing movements, Relaxation and Stamina. A hand out will also be provided as a reference and guideline to the session.

The second part of the workshop will be on how to use these techniques effectively in motion with live music and percussion. We will use African based movements, but focus on the modern expression of its origin. When I use the term, ‘African movements’ I am referring to many natural positions and everyday tasks that are performed across Africa on a daily basis.
