The Barrowland Ballroom (also known as Barrowlands) is one of Glasgow’s most famous music venues, having played host to the likes of Cypress Hill, David Bowie, Franz Ferdinand and Garbage.
The original Barrowland Ballroom was built and opened by Maggie McIver on Christmas Eve 1934. McInver was founder of the Glasgow ‘barras’, a street market in the east end of Glasgow. Known as the ‘Barras Queen’, McIver held a Christmas party each year for the street traders and their families. One year, unable to hire the local hall, she decided to build her own venue. In 1958 the ballroom was destroyed by fire but rebuilt by her family in 1960.
