STEP
Govan Project Space & offsite location
Jacqueline Donachie’s new work for Glasgow International was based on the simple structure of a step, how it both limits and provides access. Prior to lockdown, she had undertaken an investigation into the needs and wants of venues across Glasgow, including some that are temporarily used for GI, considering how we might get to them, both physically and conceptually.
As Donachie herself put it: ‘Constructing an identity requires finding a place for yourself in the world, working out who you are and where you fit. Where welcomes you? In thinking of access, we often think of lifts, bridges and elevators, infrastructure that gets everyone where we want to be. In an old city like ours that can be a complicated task that requires solutions beyond building materials.’
Donachie’s Step research informed new sculpture and drawing inside the gallery at Govan Project Space as well as a modular concrete cast piece sited in Govan
