Join artist Onyeka Igwe and artist-filmmaker Michelle Williams Gamaker for an afternoon of film screenings and conversation exploring their recent work.
Building on Igwe’s research project A (speculative) history of (colonial) reparations, the artist will screen her film A Radical Duet, which reflects on absence, restitution, and the afterlives of colonial archives. Williams Gamaker will present Thieves, from her ongoing series Critical Affection of which Thieves is her part of her work in Fictional Revenge, where cinematic histories are reimagined through acts of speculative redress.
Working across film, performance, and archival research, both artists engage with colonial legacies, visual culture, and narrative reconstruction, often reworking historical figures and inherited imagery. Their practices interrogate how histories of empire are remembered, resisted, and reconfigured through the moving image.
The screenings will be followed by a conversation between the artists, offering insight into their approaches to research, collaboration, and filmmaking.
Michelle Williams Gamaker’s film, Strange Evidence, presented by Offline is part of the Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art.
This event is produced in collaboration with the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at the University of Glasgow.
